The Secure Shell (SSH)
The Secure Shell (SSH) protocol is a secure way of accessing remote servers or devices. The first step is to install an SSH client. If you are using a Unix-based system such as Linux or macOS, you already have an SSH client installed.
Connecting to a Remote Server: To connect to a remote server, you need to know its IP address or hostname and the username you want to use to log in. Open the terminal and run the following command:
ssh username@hostname
For example, if the hostname is example.com and your username is john, you would run:
ssh john@example.com
Entering a Password: Once you run the above command, you will be prompted to enter your password. Enter your password and press Enter. If the username and password are correct, you will be logged into the remote server.
Generating an SSH Key: Instead of using a password, you can also use an SSH key to log in to the remote server. To generate an SSH key, open the terminal and run the following command:
ssh-keygen -t rsa
This will generate a public and private key in the ~/.ssh directory. The private key should be kept safe and secure, while the public key can be shared with the remote server.
Copying the Public Key to the Remote Server: To log in to the remote server using an SSH key, you need to copy the public key to the remote server. You can use the ssh-copy-id command to do this. The following command will copy the public key to the remote server:
ssh-copy-id username@hostname
Logging in with an SSH Key: After copying the public key to the remote server, you can log in to the remote server using the following command:
ssh username@hostname
Running a Command on the Remote Server: To run a command on the remote server, you can add the command to the ssh command. For example, the following command will list the files in the current directory on the remote server:
ssh username@hostname ls
